Field note · Chiang Mai, Thailand

The trek was worth every step.
The foot pain wasn’t.

One wet trail, one pair of tired trainers, and a practical question: could a custom insole make a long travel day feel less punishing without adding another pair of shoes to the bag?

A trip that became a design brief

I went to see elephants. I came back thinking about insoles.

The day was not a technical expedition. It was the kind of travel day people actually have: road, grass, dirt, slopes, standing around, then more walking than expected.

Comfortable trainers stopped feeling comfortable by late afternoon. That gap became the brief: support that fits inside the shoes already in your bag and stays useful when the itinerary changes under your feet.

The destination was planned. The mileage was not.
One category, three use profiles

Travel, hike, or trek?

Lead with Travel Insoles. Hike and Trek are useful profiles inside it, chosen by terrain, duration, footwear and carried load.

Travel · Mixed surfaces

All-day wandering

Airports, city blocks, markets, museums, temple steps and the occasional path outside town.

Hike · Uneven ground

One serious trail

Day routes where slopes, roots, rocks and long descents ask more from heel control and support.

Trek · Long duration

Repeated hard days

Long routes, uneven terrain, less recovery time and possibly a carried pack. This was the Chiang Mai starting profile.

The travel insole brief

Pack support, not another shoe.

Ergono3D turns foot, shoe and activity inputs into adjustable insole geometry. Review the support settings, preview the result, then export a print-ready STL for TPU production.

Survey to STL

From the itinerary to a printable insole.

No scanner or CAD is required to start. Describe the real day, tune the design, inspect the geometry and test the printed result in the exact shoe.

01 · Describe

Describe the real day

Enter foot and shoe details, terrain, duration and the areas where support matters most.

02 · Adjust

Tune each foot

Review arch height, heel cup, posting, thickness and other named controls.

03 · Export

Preview, then export

Inspect the generated geometry in the browser and export a print-ready STL.

04 · Validate

Print and walk-test

Print in TPU or use a suitable service, then test gradually before the trip.

Field evidence

Designed in the browser. Judged on the ground.

A travel insole succeeds when it fits the shoe and still feels right after real walking—not when it merely looks good on screen.

Before you pack

Questions for long walking days.

/ Q-01What is the difference between travel, hiking and trekking insoles?
A travel insole prioritizes all-day comfort across mixed surfaces. A hiking profile adds stability for uneven trails and descents. A trekking profile emphasizes sustained support for longer or repeated routes. The shoe still determines how much insole volume will fit.
/ Q-02Can an insole fix foot pain while travelling?
An insole can improve support, fit and comfort, but it cannot fix every cause of foot pain or rescue poorly fitting footwear. Persistent pain, numbness, swelling or worsening symptoms should be assessed by a qualified clinician.
/ Q-03Do I need a 3D printer?
Ergono3D exports a print-ready STL. Print it on a TPU-capable FDM printer or send the file to a suitable printing service.
/ Q-04Should I test the insole before a trip?
Yes. Test it in the exact shoes you plan to wear, first on short walks and then on a longer local day. Check heel hold, toe room, arch feel and rubbing.
